Melissa had been sitting in for a set with her Uncle’s band, The Country Touch, since she was 16. A song or two grew to a whole set over time, and became a very popular part of the show. They had been thinking about putting a full band behind her and building a show, but she was booked solid in a busy music theatre career. When she got a break, they decided to give it a try-John contacted Larry Warner with whom he had played in Church a time or two. Larry liked the format, which is pretty simple: Country rock Singer/songwriters of the late 60’s and early 70’s from the Troubador era in Southern California, heavy on the Linda Ronstadt.
Larry knew Bill and Cole, who were also drawn to the eclectic nature of the setlist, which features songs by Linda Ronstadt, EmmyLou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Karla Bonoff, Jackson Browne, and Rodney Crowell. A band was born.
Melmo, by the way, refers to MELissa MOrris. Her friends have been calling her that for years.
